Aromatherapy: Using Perfumes and Essential Oils

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Michael Russell “The soul of man in love is full of perfumes and sweet odours”. Plutarch. In our times, all the finest produce of the whole world is usually available to us from our local stores. We live with affluence beyond any previously known era in history which allows us choices regarding what were once luxury items. This applies particularly to our use of perfume both as a means of sensory satisfaction as well as for more practical purposes. Perfume continues to provide a subject of fascination today. There are many wonderful scents and perfumes available in toiletries and body perfumes. Essential oils provide us with perfumes which are entirely natural without chemical additives and which are healing as well as pleasant in their effect. Incense sticks provide a means of perfuming through fumes, which is where our word for perfume originally came from. And of course we have all the perfumed delights of nature to enjoy in our walks in the wild, in our enjoyment of our garden, or in the delicate scent of a rose. In a variety of ways we seek to indulge our sense of olfaction as we continue to increase the use of perfumes in our lives. Most gardeners include a variety of perfumed herbs and plants in their gardens. We use scented oils to keep away flies and insects. Although we no longer have to spread scented rushes on the floor to take away bad odours in the home, we still wish to use perfumed sprays in bathrooms and toilet areas. We generally use scents to provide a pleasing atmosphere throughout the house and when preparing for dinner guests. Oils from timber are favoured for application to existent furniture to help preserve it and also for scent. Many burn incense whilst meditating. Churches burn copious resins and oils in their ritual incense. Physiotherapists, naturopaths and aromatherapists use perfumed massage oils on skin. Therapists prescribe direct inhalation of essential oils to relieve symptoms of illness. Vaporizers are essential in relieving respiratory problems. Bath oils are used to provide a delightful way of relieving stress. Scented pillows as favoured for sleep inducement. Healing oils such as eucalyptus and peppermint are used as embrocation or as an inhalant in cases of bronchial and respiratory problems . Essential oils can be diluted with almond oil for use as a safe underarm deodorants. A drop can safely be smeared on a light globe to diffuse light scent A few drops of a perfumed oil on a tissue can be placed in a paper bin - or even rubbish bin for a pleasing effect. Essential oils such as rosemary can be diluted with olive oil and massaged into the scalp to perfume the hair when brushing. Perfumed oil can be massaged into the feet before bed to aid relaxation. These and many other ingenious ways are used in making practical use of perfume in modern lifestyles. However, the most important to so many of us, is the use of body perfume. This popular interest in perfumes however seems to arise not only from a desire to seem attractive but because of the need to have expression of the personality through the quality of one’s personal body perfume and this requires patience and discrimination in selecting ‘your’ personal perfume for regular use. Selecting from the enormous range of commercial perfumes is a daunting task but there are many who enjoy the search. Selecting from the natural essential oil range is somewhat easier because it is limited compared with the sophisticated fashionable perfumes. Discrimination is the first thing to cultivate, in order to fully benefit from the knowledge of perfumes and delight in them to the full. It is necessary to consciously develop your olfactory sense as a wine taster must do with the palate. Always remember that certain artificially produced scents can be harmful when inhaled and some deodorizers actually work on the principle of deadening your sense of smell rather than trying to cancel the odour. All chemical products can have short or long term negative effects so the caution is repeated - use the natural essential oils and perfumes in preference to a product that uses chemicals in its production. The sense of smell is extremely delicate and can be seriously injured, as can the brain, by inhalation of the smell or vapours of toxic materials. Some of the popular and delightful natural perfumes available as essential oils are Lavender, Sandalwood, Neroli, Lemon, Rose, Lemongrass, Ylang-ylang and Pine, but there are many others to try. Essential oils are strong and usually require only a drop or two with any application. However, should you suffer skin reaction, or wish to dilute the pure essential oils, almond oil is advised. Comic Book History, Fascinating!

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Dave Gieber The origins of the comic book are somewhat controversialand perhaps the jury is still out on comic book history. Solets go back to the cartoonish broadsheets of the MiddleAges, which were parchment products, created by anonymouswoodcutters. These could have been the very beginnings ofthe comic book. As mass circulation of these broadsheets became possible, they soon developed a market, particularly at publicexecutions, popular events for centuries (ugh), which drewthousands of happy spectators. Many of these spectatorswould invest in an artist’s rendering of a hanging orburning, and thus making a very lucky day for thebroadsheet seller. The broadsheet evolved into higher-level content as humorwas introduced. Eventually, all types of broadsheetsemerged, which were eventually bound in collections, theprototype of the modern magazine and thus the comic book.Magazines formatted like the popular Punch, an elegantBritish creation, became the primary focus of documentaryaccounts of news and events, fiction and humor. One can see in Punch, the sophisticated evolution of acomic book style, particularly in respect of the evolutionof comics in Great Britain. Still and all, from anhistorical standpoint, the comic strip, and later the comicbook, stood in the alley, waiting to be born. And then somesay Great Britain’s Ally Sloper’s “Half Alley” was thefirst comic book. This was a black and white tabloid thathad panels of cartoons mixed with a sliver of news; circa1884. Now while all this was going on in Great Britain, thisinching towards the comic book, the United States had itsown brand of evolution. Instead of magazines, US newspaperstook the lead in creating the comic book industry. Newspapers, with their first steps, took their single imagegags and evolved them into multi-paneled comic strips. Itwas during this period that William Randolph Hearst scoreda knockout with the Yellow Kid, which was actually printedin yellow ink. So where did the actual comic book begin? Some say it waswith reprints of Carl Schultz’ Foxy Grandpa, from 1901 to1905. Although others say it was Great Britain’s AllySloper’s Half Alley. In 1902, Hearst published theKatzenjammer Kids and Happy Hooligan in books withcardboard covers. For a time, the Yellow Kid himself was a top contender. Butit depends how rigid you are in your description of a comicbook. These examples, for sure, were predecessors to themodern comic book, which exploded in the 1930’s. The Whitman Publishing Company, in 1934, became one of thepre-launchers for the modern comic book. They publishedforty issues of Famous Comics, which was a black and whitehardcover reprint. The first regularly published comic bookin the more recognizable modern format though, was FamousFunnies. It featured such memorable characters as JoePalooka, Buck Rogers and Mutt and Jeff. Superheroes as we know them today took a strong foothold inthe 1930’s. In 1938, Max C. Gaines, who was one of thecomic industry giants, brought “Superman” to Dell Comicspublisher, Harry Donenfield. Donenfield scored the comic coup of the century when hepublished a story written by two teenagers, Jerry Siegeland Joe Shuster- and so “Superman of Metropolis” (the titleof their short story they wrote in their own fanzine) wasborn. Superman was to set a standard for comic book heroesthat persist to this day. Dave Gieber is the owner and editor of a website builtaround one of his childhood passions. Increase Sales By Thinking Beyond Your Standard Trade Show Display

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Mat Kelly The most incredible, cutting-edge, innovative product or service in the world is not going to generate revenue without a valiant marketing effort. Attending trade shows is a smart initiative to get exposure for your company but if you are not paying close attention to the details of your trade show display, you are missing an opportunity to showcase your company above the competition. Your trade show display creates a backdrop for you to meet new prospects and hopefully lay the foundation for a lucrative relationship with them. When a trade show attendee stops by your exhibit, they are stepping into your portable office, and you are offering a snapshot of what your company is about. If you want to keep a prospect in your trade show booth for more than a couple of seconds, you must be able to quickly establish trust and projecting a polished, professional image, combined with a personable staff, sets an excellent foundation of trust. Adding accessories to your trade show display can make a huge difference in the efficiency and effectiveness of your presentation. Literature racks provide information for passive prospects to get what they need without feeling any sales pressure, or offer information that may prompt the prospect to ask questions. In addition, an offer on the banner stand or the multimedia demo is an opportunity to spark the prospects curiosity and drive traffic to your booth. While the flooring you use for your trade show exhibit may seem insignificant, it contributes to the overall tone of your trade show exhibit space. Here are some tools to help your trade show display attract attention and create a comfortable stage for you to connect with attendees. Literature Racks An excellent tool for organizing and displaying your printed materials, literature racks can prove quite valuable if your sales team is preoccupied with another prospect, or if the passer-by wants more information. Rather than waiting for an available salesperson, and growing inpatient doing so, the prospect can still get information about your company. And when your sales team is talking with a prospect, rather than sifting through boxes or piles of brochures and flyers that are spread across the table, they can quickly and easily grab the information the prospect needs. With the available space on your table, you have more room to display your product, offer samples or do your product demos. Banner Stands Portable and lightweight, banner stands help attract attention to your space. You can display your company logo with information about your business, announce a special event, or offer information about a new product on these handy marketing pieces. Floor models stand between seven- and nine-feet tall, while hanging banners can be as large as ten feet. You also have a choice between fabric or vinyl. Trade Show Flooring Because this part of your trade show exhibit is rarely noticed, you may think you can get away with skipping this one. But keep in mind that ambience goes a long way when trying to separate yourself from the competition. Whether you are looking to duplicate the appearance of a wood finish, a stone or marble finish, carpet or texture, there is likely a flooring option that will work for you, no matter what color or style you are looking for. And with your sales team standing for several hours over multiple days, trade show flooring is a must as it can reduce standing fatigue. Keep in mind, if you purchase your own trade show flooring rather than renting it from the trade show exhibit hall, youll save money. Multimedia We are living in the age of email, podcasts and webinars. Whether its something as simple as a game show, an infomercial type format or youve decided to make room in the budget to produce a full product demo, you should have some sort of multimedia tool featuring your product. Not only does this make you a little more cutting-edge than the standard exhibitors, but this is also an opportunity to begin building some type of association in the prospect’s mind hopefully positive with your product, whether it is fun, efficiency, innovation or style. If you dont go above and beyond average expectations for your customers in your daily business practices from the helpful voice that greets prospect calls over the phone to following up with the customer after the sale your company will be passed over for a competitor that does. And at a trade show, where the competition is only a glance away, the same principle applies. Always keep in mind that your trade show exhibit is an attendees first introduction to your business and first impressions are lasting. As with any other area of your business, put your best foot forward with your trade show exhibit and the results are sure to follow. How to Help Your Teen Prepare for a Strong Financial Future (What Schools Should Teach About Credit)

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Jeanette Joy Fisher Our college-bound son just bought his first home at 21. He was able to buy a home for forty thousand under the appraised price, get a low interest rate, finance the closing costs, and pay no money down. How could he possibly do this? His credit score is over 700. You can help your teenager prepare for his or her financial future by establishing a high credit rating. Offer your teenager these three crucial credit tips for a great financial future: 1. Start early. Begin by successfully managing a checking account– the first credit requirement. Wells Fargo Bank has a program for children to open joint accounts with a parent as young as 13 years of age. For a free individual checking account, Washington Mutual requires a minimum age of 18 or a manager’s approval for younger account holders. 2. Apply for a major credit card at 18. It’s easier to get a first-class credit card with favorable rates and terms while a student attends college before the age of 22. Why do banks want to open accounts for students who have no credit history or employment? Because lenders know that college graduates in general make more money and also pay their bills on time. Also, most consumers don’t like shopping around for credit and tend to keep their credit accounts. Therefore, lenders desire to establish strong relationships with the preferred market early in their credit experience. This doesn’t mean that you as the parent need to co-sign; banks expect parents to help out with the payments when necessary. Just be crystal clear with your child what you expect regarding debt management. The purpose is to teach responsibility and to establish credit–not to go into debt. 3. Manage the credit card account with credit scores in mind. Once the account is opened, encourage your child to use the card for necessities that would be purchased with cash–not luxuries–and to pay the debt before finance charges accrue. However, don’t pay the entire balance off each month; let a little roll over at least every two months. Banks don’t appreciate accounts paid in full each month. More important, paid accounts don’t factor into the credit score as much as an account with a low balance. Explain to you teenager that the purpose of using a credit card is to establish good credit. To do this, a credit card should never have a balance over 50% of the available credit. The best credit scores have accounts with only 10% of the credit line used. Setting up a checking account and a credit card account helps your teenager learn about responsible money management, with the bonus of building strong credit to finance a home.
